Summit Refrigeration Group was very fortunate to work at the newest, most innovative cheese manufacturer to impact the cheese market. Located in the heart of Wisconsin cheese country, in Holmen, WI, they create, produce and deliver customized, high performance cheese solutions for cheese markets worldwide. In July 2019, the General Contractor approached Summit Refrigeration Group with a request for a design/build ammonia refrigeration system for a new cheese manufacturing facility. It was to include cooling and air quality control of packaging, shredding, cheese prep, blast chilling, storage and loading dock areas. The system also included a glycol chilling system to provide chilled glycol to a cheese processing system.
The ammonia refrigeration system required a combination of processes; high pressure liquid ammonia feeding the area cooling loads, RMAU’s and glycol chilling system, as well as pumped, recirculated liquid ammonia feeding the blast cooling loads. The use of Danfoss motorized expansion valves with EKC controllers provided precise liquid feed to the DX evaporators. Parker “block” style valves made the installation of control valves quick and easy, and provided a clean installation. An additional challenge included the installation of (12) blast cell evaporators. There was minimal work space between the top of the cells and the bottom of the bar joists, in order to install the structure for hanging the evaporators. The system is designed for the addition of a 2nd chilled glycol-cooled cheese processing line and six (6) additional blast cells (12 ea. evaporators).
